When you decide to become an Abuela doula, you will be encouraged to reach back into your cultural heritage to bring forward the traditions of your mothers and your mothers’ mothers. The role of a doula is to support and to be with women as they travel through pregnancy, birth and those early postnatal days. To sit in and share the wisdom of the Abuelas, the grandmothers.

Who this is for 


 You learn best in a room with people, practising together. You want a solid foundation that holds inclusion and ancestral wisdom at the centre. You want skills you can use at the very next enquiry or birth.

 4 in-person training days, 10:00–16:00.

 Online specialist component: live masterclasses after the intensive (recorded where possible)

Nikita Akilapa

North London-based doula, yoga teacher, hypnobirthing instructor and antenatal educator, Nikita has been supporting families through the perinatal year for more than a decade. She brings Yoruba heritage to this work and with it, an understanding of birth rooted in cultural knowledge that runs far deeper than any curriculum. 

Nikita is Abuela Doulas trained. That matters to us, and it should matter to you. It means she understands what it is to support birthing people within systems that don't always serve them well, and she shows up with that understanding intact at every stage of care. 

She also brings exceptional breadth. Over the last 15 years, Nikita has taken her teaching to Greece, Italy, Portugal, America and Australia. She serves as Brand Ambassador and teacher for Australian doula app The Birth Class, and runs her own antenatal education offer, Birth Prepped. Her practice spans relaxation, birth preparation, physical strength building, hypnobirthing and infant feeding support, emotional, educational and practical, from pregnancy through the weeks after birth.
IN PERSON:

Delivered over 4 consecutive days, 10am - 4pm each day. There's plenty of time for reflection and discussion, as well as lunch! Accommodation is not provided.
