Postnatal Sankofa  Deep, Nurturing Postnatal Care - UK Training Course

When you decide to become an Abuela doula, you will be encouraged to reach back into your cultural heritage to bring forward the traditions of your mothers and your mothers’ mothers. The role of a doula is to support and to be with women as they travel through pregnancy, birth and those early postnatal days. To sit in and share the wisdom of the Abuelas, the grandmothers.

Bring ancestral wisdom forward. Serve families with cultural safety. Build a thriving practice you’re proud of.

Become a confident postnatal doula from home

Become the postnatal doula families remember for life.

The Postnatal Sankofa Course teaches you how to deliver deeply nurturing, culturally safe postnatal care and build a sustainable doula business without imposter syndrome, cultural appropriation, or burnout.

IN PERSON:

Delivered over 4 days, in person. North London. Venue to be confirmed on booking.

Facilitator: Rubi Rodriquez-Nieto

Rubí is an Abuela-trained doula, social anthropologist, and traditional postnatal care practitioner with deep roots in Mexican indigenous wellbeing traditions.

Originally from the Huasteca region of Mexico — a place with rich ancestral knowledge passed down through generations — she grew up learning from her mother and grandmother to understand health and healing from a hybrid, culturally grounded perspective. That knowledge lives at the heart of her postnatal practice today.

Her postnatal work is rooted in la cuarentena — the Mexican tradition of the 40-day lying-in period — alongside rebozo closing ceremony, healing foods, and the decolonial reclaiming of ancestral postpartum knowledge. She holds the postnatal period as sacred, unhurried, and central to long-term maternal wellbeing.

She trained as a doula in 2019 while working at a refuge supporting mothers who were survivors of domestic abuse, and has since built extensive experience in trauma-informed, culturally-responsive, and anti-racist maternity care.

Testimonials

I absolutely loved this Postnatal Sankofa course it is filled with so much information. The tutors are fantastic, so honest and open. My tutors Mars and Lorna really gave me food for thought. I loved the group of ladies I was studying with. Everyone is so supportive and understanding. We all learnt something from one another, sharing our own experiences in a safe place. I didn’t know what to expect from the course as it was going to be on Zoom. (As the last time I studied was over ten years ago in classroom filled with people) The course touched on every subject in regards to becoming a Doula for example- nourishing food, boundaries, breast feeding, advocating, relationships and so much more. The reading material provided was so beneficial to my learning. I learnt so much and gained priceless knowledge from this course. I felt it was a very safe place to learn not just for me but for everyone involved.

A big big THANK YOU. Since completing the course, I have been facilitating groups for parents with pre crawlers, where we talk about birth and we just hold each other during these first few months, I’ve also had amazing experiences working postnatally with individual families and single parents, my clients have been mainly black birth folk and non binary parents.
